Interview from http://www.hobbymap.de/

For everyone who do not know skwal and monoski, what is it all about and where is the difference?

In the alpine winter sports a monoski is a very wide ski with bindings mounted in parallel side by side in direction of skiing. In contrast a skwal is more narrow and the bindings are mounted one after the other. The counterpart to the skwal in summer for the water sport is also called monoski.

What is the special charm and the fascination just in these sports for you, why not „normal skiing“ or snowboarding or wakeboarding?

In winter Skwal is the ideal sports device for me for carving, because both feet load one edge. Furrowing turns with extreme sloping positions in the snow which is flattened by snowcats, like being on rails is simply incredibly nice and playful, as free as hovering with the monoski over moguls or in the deep powder.
In summer I switch from skwal to water-monoski to experience fascinating accelerations and sloping situations in the six buoys slalom in a cableway.

Relating to your sport what were the nicest / most thrilling moments and experiences and which role does it play in your life?

The most unbelievable moment is to skwal on a new flattened slope with that many small frozen grooves originated from the snowcat. If one glides in the turn with the glove at high speed over the grooves, hum originates. Only thinking of it gives me the pleasant creeps.
Or with the monoski to go down a very steeply slope in the deep snow in the wood which one can not handle on foot in summer without a rope, or to go with the snow-monoski on sand or to use a real ironing board as a snow-monoski.
To glide on a hot summer day over the water and to enjoy the feeling of happiness if one cope with the next higher degree of difficulty - by raising the speed up to 58 km/h, then by shortening the line – the six buoys for the first time, one must simply experience this. Skwal, monoski and water-monoski are more than only a sport. It is an attitude to life which gives me a lot of power, with the countless nicest moments which I will not forget.

If one like to begin as a young person seriously with skwal or monoski, how and where to start and on what one should pay attention to?

First of all one should get informed in the internet. Then one must be aware that learning these sports goes not overnight, but if one has caught once fire, one is recompensed with many small senses of achievement and getting a little better and better. The better one is able to do it, the even more fun has one and this is the motivation.
For skwal and monoski one should already be able to do skiing. When carving please one must go extremly carefully, no matter whether using pairski-funcarver or snowboard-raceboard or skwal, because a lot of space is needed and the quick changes of direction at high speed crossways to the slope can not be estimated by the other winter sportsmen.
For the water mono ski simply go to cableways and begin with pair ski. There one can get instructions and advices. This is also very nice for family excursions or company events. One can glide there also on a big plate over the water or make rotations and jumps with a short, wide trickski.
